Metehan Tekinirk

Metehan Tekinirk is a social scientist specializing in Comparative Politics and also working in the fields of International Relations and Political Sociology. His primary interests are political institutions and culture, democracy and democratic backsliding, nationalism, and populism in power. He earned his PhD from Boston University in 2022 with a manuscript problematizing the populism – national identity relationship and the dynamics of democratic erosion in contemporary Turkey. Besides Turkish politics, he specializes in the study of other developing regions and settings like Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and Latin America. Dr. Tekinirk continues to teach classes on political violence, democracy, populism, nationalism, and international politics at Boston University. He is currently working on two book manuscripts on (i) the historical impact and implications of serial populism and (ii) national identity reorientation in Turkey under new authoritarian elites, as well as an edited volume on populism in power around the world.
