I work on polarizing strategies of populists and the pernicious consequences for democracy. I have led an international group of scholars in a comparative study of polarized democracies worldwide, and am now researching strategies to mitigate the negative consequences for democracy. At the macro level, I focus especially on opposition strategies and institutional reforms, and at the micro-level on interventions to reduce the hostility and threat perceptions of Us vs. Them polarizing populism. I am committed to the dissemination of scholarly research to policy and public audiences, evidence-based policymaking, and providing recommendations to policymakers and civil society based on research.
